The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities will provide participants with an educational experience in diversity appreciation, prejudice reduction, and human relations skills. Through facilitated conversation, participants will be offered the opportunity to explore the complexities and subtleties of bias and prejudice that have the potential to create divisions in the workplace and the community. The proposed training program offers learning in both the cognitive and affective domains by impacting:
The Head: Sessions offer theory and models for understanding inclusion and discrimination at deep levels. Theoretical underpinnings are based on the most up-todate educational research.
The Heart: Participants have an opportunity to explore their own feelings, experiences and stories, along with the feelings, experiences, and stories of their colleagues, constituents, and the community they serve.
The Hand: Participants develop concrete tools, skills, and strategies that they can use to make appropriate and meaningful changes in their departments.
OBJECTIVES By the completion of the program, participants will:
Develop a shared language for thinking about and exploring issues of diversity and inclusion;
Examine the role of prejudice and advantage, and how these dynamics impact diverse groups, locally and nationally; and
Express an increased awareness of how to create more inclusive workplace and community environments.
