Clinical Medical Assistant (FastForward - WFS Cohort 1A Hybrid)

Clinical Medical Assistants (CMAs) are a vital part of clinical patient care. Because CMAs are trained to perform so many different tasks, they are in great demand in the workforce. The CMA is the most versatile member of the healthcare team and is an important part of the successful physician practice.  Although the skills the CMA performs will vary among medical offices, this course will fully prepare the student with a wide variety of skills, making him or her an essential part of the healthcare team.  

This course will provide a comprehensive overview of all aspects of clinical medical assisting, including care and management of the patient, the different body systems, administering and injecting medications, insurance and coding requirements, the special needs of pediatric and geriatric patients, and employment opportunities and strategies for Clinical Medical Assistants.  

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Demonstrate required competencies utilizing safety and infection control principles, as well as professional communication and interpersonal interactions.
  • Discuss clinical reasoning/clinical judgment used in the clinical medical assistant role to care for diverse client populations.
  • Explain the role of the clinical medical assistant in quality improvement processes to improve client care.
  • Discuss how the clinical medical assistant collaborates with members of the Interprofessional healthcare team, the client, and the client's support persons.
  • Describe how information management principles, techniques and systems, and patient care technologies are used by the clinical medical assistant and the Interprofessional team in healthcare settings.
  • Explain professional, legal, and ethical guidelines related to the clinical medical assistant scope of practice.
  • Describe how the clinical medical assistant contributes to a culture of caring in providing holistic, compassionate care.
  • Discuss how the clinical medical assistant collaborates with the Interprofessional team in the assessment and pharmacologic management of diverse patient populations across the lifespan.
  • Discuss how the clinical medical assistant collaborates with the Interprofessional team in the preparation, obtaining scheduling and reporting laboratory/testing results to the health care team.
  • Demonstrate patient care skills that will be learned and practices in the program.
When a student completes this course, the student will be fully prepared to enter the workforce as a clinical medical assistant, as well as take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination.
