With the decrease in funding from foundations and governmental institutions nonprofit organizations need to look at alternative methods of funding to continue their work. In addition to increasing donor specific programs and other fundraising methods such as capital campaigns nonprofits are now using social enterprise, also known as earned income strategies, for capacity planning, growth, and increasing unrestricted funds.  With an increase in unrestricted funds additional capacity can be achieved to help a nonprofit continue its work. In this session, local guest speakers will also be providing their background stories to students regarding how they were able to start their social enterprises.  This interactive component of the course will allow students to directly inquire with panelists regarding some of the challenges and successes each have had in creating their social enterprise as a revenue source for their respective nonprofit organizations.  This course will include a panel discussion with 3 area leaders of organizations successfully integrating social enterprise into their business model.   Key Learning Objectives:   Understand how social enterprises work and evaluate whether this strategy could be a way to earn unrestricted funds Learn several fundraising strategies outside of grant writing Evaluate an organization’s fundraising strategy through a discussion with local panelists who will share their respective stories and case studies
