Asking the Right Questions: Best Practice Business Writing 
Duration: Two (2) days Three (3) hours each

Course Objectives
o Explore rhetorical situations as a means of analysis for all types of communication
o Identify, review and apply grammatical and mechanical lessons 
o Analyze current abilities in composing documents and the principles of concision
o Discuss and role-play best practices for improving sole source and single source documents in various rhetorical situations

Course Outline

I. Rhetorical situation (30 min.)
a. Participants will learn about the components of a rhetorical situation and how it can be used for analyzing every act of communication.
b. Participants will practice use of the rhetorical situation through an analysis and composition activity.

II. Asking the right questions (30 min.)
a. Participants will utilize skills learned from the rhetorical situation lesson to consider appropriate questions for a target audience.
b. Participants will practice use of the journalist’s questions and apply them to various writing scenarios.

III. Grammar/mechanics (2 hours)
a. Participants will review and learn grammatical and mechanical lessons, including but not limited to commas, independent clauses, run on sentences and fragments, dangling modifiers, and appropriate formal diction.
b. Participants will test their skills in a grammar review activity.
c. Participants will strengthen proofreading abilities and utilize them to self-assess their use of standard American English conventions and proper grammar and mechanics.
d. Participants will learn the most common grammatical mistakes to avoid.

IV. Concision/directness (45 min.)
a. Participants will learn the principles of concision and how to avoid wordiness in writing.
b. Participants will complete a concision and directness activity to apply their skills.

V. Sole source and single source documents (1 hour)
a. Participants will review their abilities in composing sole source and single source justifications and analyze how to strengthen their writing in these documents.
b. Participants will revise and reflect on how these documents can be strengthened based on knowledge of rhetorical situation, asking the right questions, grammar and mechanics, and concision.
c. Participants will role play scenarios to test skills in composing sole source and single source documents in various rhetorical situations.

VI. Scopes of work (1 hour, 15 min.)
a. Participants will learn how to effectively compose scopes of work for a target audience.
b. Participants will practice their writing skills and analyze each other’s compositions. 
c. Participants will role play scenarios to test skills in composing scope of work documents in various rhetorical situations.
