Beyond the Punch Card: Measuring "Work" Based on Value Added

The Great Coronavirus Lockdown of 2020 has left countless organizations asking: How can we fairly and effectively measure and compensate the work beyond seat-time at a worksite?  This hands-on workshop will give participants a new framework to measure "work" within a selected position, and determine the most appropriate method(s) to measure progress and completed work within that position. Based on the evaluation, participants will be able to determine where their work policies and documentation protocols need to be redesigned to align with the nature of the work.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
Participants will ...
(1) Identify THE SOLUTION the job solves (What fundamental problem/need does the position address, and how crucial is it to the organization's mission?)
(2) Describe THE NATURE of the job (What type(s) of tasks, extent of giving/receiving supervision, and autonomous decision-making is required for the work?)
(3) Determine THE MEASURE OF "PROGRESS" and "COMPLETION" (Is doing the work confined to time, location, immediacy (needing to be on-call), or based on "needle movement" with specific quality/completion metrics?). Participants will bring 1-2 job descriptions to use in the application exercises.
(4) Discuss APPROPRIATE CHANGES to work policy and documentation protocols for people in the identified position, based on findings.
