4-Stages of Psychological Safety

What does it mean to work in a truly safe work environment? We all face everyday choices in our organizations, whether in relationships with our colleagues or when making decisions about our work. These choices come with risk. Will I be accepted for being myself? Will I be judged if I admit making a mistake? Will I look stupid or embarrass myself for trying something new? Will I face consequences if I speak up about something I care about?
Psychological Safety is the idea that an environment can be safe to take risks without fear of negative consequences. In organizations with psychological safety, teams can create more inclusive environments that also tap into the ideas, creativity, and talent of everybody on the team, creating both individual and organizational success.
In this course, we will learn about psychological safety and explore the 4 Stages framework, which is a powerful tool to support individuals and leaders committed to the effort of improving psychological safety in their organizations.
Learning Objectives:
  • Develop an understanding of Psychological Safety, what it is and what it is not.
  • Learn about each of the 4-Stages of Psychological Safety (Inclusion Safety, Learner Safety, Contributor Safety, and Challenger Safety), how they build upon one another, and how to support each stage within your organization.
  • Reflect on the ways you influence your organization’s culture and develop a 90 day personal action plan.
