Human Interactions in a Diverse Society

Participants will gain an enhanced understanding of concepts focused on improving our communication and interactions that honors the diversity of our community and explore strategies that promote meaningful conversations about difficult topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belongingness.

Microaggressions and Macroaggressions:  Define & identify language that intentionally or unintentionally harms others based on our own diverse cultural identities.

Emotional Intelligence & Mindfulness:  Sensitive topics such as race, ethnicity, gender/gender identity, age, ability, politics, etc. can be difficult to navigate through.  It is natural for people to have emotional reactions when engaging in conversations about difficult topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belongingness.  We will identify and discuss strategies which address our emotional reactions and how to interpret those feelings to prevent them from acting as barriers to making connections with others.

Courageous Conversations & Crucial Conversations:  conversations about difficult, sensitive, or controversial topics can be opportunities for learning and growth for everyone involved.  We will explore how to step out of our comfort zones and engage in civil discourse with others the discuss these issues in meaningful ways
